Biggest Crowd Yet
One Girl Is All It Takes

When Jack came behind the curtain to let me know a group just walked in, I already knew they were a group of tall straight guys. I could see their profiles, their unease — their heterosexuality — in that inch of exposed space between the curtain and the ceiling.
They’re not staying for the whole show, I said.
Have you noticed that there’s always a group of straight guys who leave?
Jack replied, yes, but there’s women in that group.
Turns out it was just one woman in that group. But she was the alpha’s girlfriend. Ken and Barbie — the two of them seemed to enjoy my show: they laughed, smiled and actively participated when I did crowd work.
But the other three guys with them — they looked like how I would feel at an I.U.D. clinic
Nonetheless, they stayed for the entire show. Along with nineteen other audience members. I had twenty-four today — my highest so far this fringe!
One woman is all it takes. To make them stay. Me.
